Galilee was born in the Spring of 1960 with Lenten Services in the old Chester School and Methodist Church. Our first regular Worship Service was held in the Grasonville Seventh Day Adventist Church, led by Pastor Julius Kimpel. On December 26th, 1961 we officially organized as a Lutheran Congregation at a meeting held at the Romancoke Fire Hall. Our Women's Guild organized on January 18th, 1962. December 12th, 1962 we were accepted as a "Mission Congregation" of the Southeastern District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. On January 19th, 1964 our name, Galilee Evangelical Lutheran Church was adopted, and on Sept. 13th that year Rev. John Trojian of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Cordova began to serve us on a part-time basis. On April 26th, 1965 our Congregation was incorporated under the laws of the State of Maryland. The adoption of our Constitution was on May 25, 1966 and we purchased land in Harbor View for our building. On November 15, 1966, we signed a contract with Bennington Builders of Denton for construction of our Church building, which was dedicated on August 13, 1967. On July 4th, 1976, we broke ground for the Parsonage which was dedicated on October 3rd, 1976. On July 12th, 1981 our first full-time Pastor was installed - Rev. Edward Fehskens. On December 6th, that year, we burned our mortgage. April 13th, 1986 Rev. William Fischer was installed as Pastor. On November 18th, 1988 we broke ground for our new Fellowship Hall, which was dedicated on December 3rd, 1989. Our current Pastor, Chuck Braband was installed on August 20th, 1989. On March 25th, 1990 we dedicated our Steeple in memory of Pastor Frederick Kemper. |
